A free and robust press is key to democracy: Fairfax
It is not the job of journalists to be liked or even respected, but to ask the questions people do not want asked, according to Fairfax Media, publisher of this website.
It has told the government’s print media inquiry that the relationships between reporters and people in power are fraught, but that is no reason to restrict their reporting, given that a robust free press is fundamental to democracy.
Fairfax executives are due to give evidence to the inquiry in Sydney this afternoon, and its submission opposes any further regulation in circumstances where there is no evidence of the serious ethical failings seen in Britain.
