Barack Obama rightly argued on Friday that the lot of successive generations is better. But the he also articulated the ”why” behind the white-black disconnect. “In the African-American community at least, there’s a lot of pain around what happened here,” he said. ”I think it’s important to recognise that the African-American community is looking at this through a set of experiences and a history that … that doesn’t go away.
“This is the context in which the case of Marissa Alexander, the 32-year-old mother of three, is being compared, amid great head-shaking and disbelief, with that of George Zimmerman. Alexander, who is black, was jailed for 20 years for discharging a weapon to protect herself from a violent husband; but Zimmerman, of white and Peruvian parentage, walked free when a Florida jury acknowledged his legal right to pump a bullet into Martin’s chest.
