Unity Amidst Volatility: Thais-Help-Thais in full swing at “Thai Tour Thai” Travel Fair
BANGKOK – Domestic travel is expected to be a major beneficiary of the Thai political unrest, especially during the upcoming school holiday months of April-May. More than 900 companies from all around the country exhibited at the “Thai Thiew Thai” (Thai Tour Thai) travel fair organised between Feb 27 – Mar 2 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. The turnout was relatively tepid on the first day but swelled on Mar 2, just one day after the anti-government protestors announced a scaling down of their protest sites.
The photographs below, taken on March 2 morning, give some idea of the massive turnout, which I estimate at around 300,000 over the four-day period. The discounts offered were mouth-watering and way above normal, for bookings made during the trade-show period itself. The range and diversity of the products were also astounding.
Even though the fundamental political issues diving Thailand remain unsettled, it is clear that Thais will be touring Thailand extensively this summer to help out other Thais (Thai Chuay Thai) affected by the unrest. That alone will prove to be a unifying factor for the country.
