Palestinian leader: Israel considers itself above the law
MOSCOW, April 14, 2015 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Tuesday slammed Israel’s longstanding policy of deception, saying that it would no longer fool anybody.
Speaking at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, which conferred upon him honorary doctorate degree, Abbas stated that the world is still witnessing Israel’s aggression and racism against the Palestinian people and that Israel is still acting as a rogue; placing itself above international law and continuing its occupation of Palestinian territories.
He added that Israel is still maintaining its long-standing policy of conducting a meaningless vicious circle of negotiations in an effort to shirk the prerequisites of just and comprehensive peace, gain time and impose a fait accompli to make it impossible to establish the future Palestinian state.
We aspire to witness peace reigning in the region, so that all future generations in our homeland as well as neighboring countries, including Israel, enjoy its fruits; a regional peace under which all live in security, safety, stability and good-neighborliness, stated Abbas.
Abbas made these remarks during his latest official visit to Russia, during which Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin met with him on Monday in his Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside Moscow.
The current state of Israeli-Palestine relations as well as armed conflicts in the Middle East was at the top of the talks agenda. “Now as the situation grows more difficult in the region, of course, it is very important to hold consultations on the full range of issues. I mean of course, primarily the Israeli-Palestinian issue but not only that, I would like to discuss with you the situation in Syria, Iraq and now in Yemen,” said Putin addressing Abbas at the start of the meeting.
Putin said, ‘It’s a pleasure to note that relations between Palestine and Russia have been growing steadily and are constantly, step-by-step, becoming stronger.” He added, ‘And now, when the situation in the region has become more complicated, of course, it is particularly important to consult with you on all the issues at hand.’
Abbas stated, ‘I want to note that we highly appreciate the cooperation with your country and the efforts of Russia to solve the Palestinian problem with regaining of the peace in our lands.’
He added, ‘There are many problems in our region with which Russia has to work with and I must admit that Russia’s efforts are successful.’
The two presidents also held talks over trade and the economic situation between both countries, with Putin stating ‘I am glad to note that relations between Palestine and Russia were developing and strengthening constantly.’
