FREE Lectures on “How Visit Thailand Year 1987 Revolutionised Global Tourism”
In 1987, Thailand marked the auspicious 60th (5th cycle of life) birth anniversary of His Majesty the late King Bhumibhol Adulyadej (Rama IX) the Great with a momentous national celebration known as Visit Thailand Year, an event which revolutionised global tourism.
This year, marking His Majesty’s 96th (8th cycle) birth anniversary year, is a good time to reflect on that extraordinary historic event.
The 1987 campaign was marketing genius at its best.
Its aftermath was management failure at its worst.
I covered the epic marketing extravaganza more closely than any other travel trade journalist, and then wrote the only two books about it.
In 2024, I am giving FREE commemorative lectures on VTY 1987 to help the young generation learn the lessons of history and promote an honest, reflective definition of “sustainability”.
They lectures cover:
(+) The full history of Visit Thailand Year 1987.
(+) How it was planned and executed.
(+) How it revolutionised Thai, Mekong, ASEAN and the global Travel & Tourism industry.
(+) How Thailand failed to build on that success by creating a truly sustainable well-managed industry.
(+) Why the lessons of Visit Thailand Year 1987 are more relevant than ever.
The lectures are designed for serious students and scholars of tourism, corporate executives, academics, consultants, destination planners and civil society groups worldwide.
