Women in Leadership: Skal Bangkok Calls for Legal Reforms to Empower Women across all organizations

Bangkok – Skal International Bangkok, a leading association for tourism industry leaders, recently hosted a forum tackling the crucial issue of promoting women in leadership roles. The event, held at the Novotel Bangkok Bangna Hotel, brought together legal professionals and executives from various organizations for a thought-provoking discussion on “Laws Thailand Should Implement to Promote More Women in Leadership Roles in Organizations.”

Skal Champions Diversity and Inclusion

Mr James Thurlby, President of Skal International Bangkok, set the stage by emphasizing the organization’s commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within the tourism industry. He expressed hope that the forum would lead to actionable recommendations for legals that could create a more equitable landscape for women in leadership positions.

A Call for Stronger Support Systems

Ms Kanokros Wongvekin, Vice President Women In Leadership of Skal International Bangkok, shared her own experience as a woman in the industry and highlighted the importance of dedicated efforts towards empowering women. She pointed out the lack of robust policies and laws as a key barrier, underlining the need for stronger support systems to enable women to thrive in leadership roles across all sectors.

Ms Kanokros mentioned sample of law in Europe for example in Spain , the companies in the Stock Exchange must have women board of directors minimum half of the total boards of directors.

A Gathering of Experts

The forum boasted a distinguished panel of attendees, including legal professionals like Ms Phusanisa Tabtimtong, a lecturer at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi University’s Faculty of Law, and MR Somkiat Moralai, a former president of the Hotel’s Public Relations Association and current university lecturer. Additionally, executives from various organizations, such as Sasitorn Boucher of Global Development Consulting Co., Ltd. and Kanpitcha Kongsombat of Paulaner Beer Thailand, participated in the discussions.

Acting Lieutenant Thitus Sresusawat, Lawyer said, “German starts to use the law to support Women Leadership on 1st January 2016 for companies in the Stock Exchange that must have Women board of directors minimum 30% of the total boards and they amended the law to increase from 30% to 50% in 2018. Then they amended again on 1st August 2022 that the companies in the Stock Exchange must have Women board of directors minimum one third of men board of directors, if not the companies must put in an Annual Report for a plan next year”.
