How US Uses Sanctions to Hold the World Hostage
Beijing, July 05, 2012 – The U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently said as China and Singapore have greatly reduced their oil exports from Iran, the United States have decided to give the two countries exemption on Iran oil sanction. The observing period is six months and extendable.
The recent situation of the Middle East is extremely tense. The United States has adopted a policy of surrounding Iran instead of attacking it. In order to cut off Iran’s economic lifeline, the United States has launched an oil war to isolate Iran by using sanctions to threaten other countries to keep away from Iran’s oil. It is a U.S.-style “soap opera” of holding the world hostage.
The U.S.-Iran conflict has a long history, and the United States neither likes Iran nor allows other countries to approach Iran. Therefore, the United States always tries to find an opportunity to turn the conflict between the two countries into a conflict between the world and Iran and turn the bilateral issue between the United States and Iran into an issue between the world and Iran.
At the end of 2011, the United States unilaterally expanded its economic sanction on Iran and forbad foreign financial organizations to do business with the central bank of Iran. Following the United States, the European Union implemented oil embargo on Iran since July 1 of 2012, and from then on, the international alliance opposing Iran has been formed.
Currently, Iran is the fourth largest crude oil producing country in the world and the third large crude oil exporting country of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Iran’s income from its oil and natural gas exports accounts for 80 percent of its total economic income. It is expected that the United States’ sanction will reduce the Iranian government’s revenue by between 20 and 30 percent.
After the United States and European Union have launched sanctions on Iran, what should China do? The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China expresses that China opposes that a country implements a unilateral sanction on another country according to its domestic laws and China also does not accept the action of forcing a third country to implement the unilateral sanction.
The background behind the United States exempted China this time was very complicated. On the one hand, the United States did not exempt China until the last minute, and it hopes that China does not buy oil from Iran and plays a more effective role in the Iran Nuclear Talks. On the other hand, the United States does not want to take the risk of damaging its diplomatic relationship with China.
Although the United States declared that it implements a double-track policy of the “negotiation” and “pressure” on Iran, its policy focuses more on “pressure.” Recently, in order to completely strike down Iran’s economy and force Iran to give in, the United States has expanded the range and targets of the sanction and even fallen into a strange circle of “launching the sanction for the sanction.” In a sense, the sanction has changed from a measure of solving the Iran Nuclear Issue into a political trick manipulated by the United States.
