U.S.Workers Call for a Fair Share of National Wealth

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 30, 2012 – Statement by Andrew Friedman, Executive Director of the Center for Popular Democracy:

Recent weeks have seen extremely courageous efforts by America’s most vulnerable and exploited workers to stand up for themselves and their families. Workers at fast food giants like [McDonald’s, at Walmart warehouses and stores, and at car wash centers have gone on strike to demand an end to rampant violations of their legal rights, better conditions, and respect for their dignity.

Many of these companies are icons of American success, but, sadly, this success has been built on the backs of hundreds of thousands of mistreated workers. In the wake of a historic election that demonstrated widespread dissatisfaction with income inequality and trickle-down economics, workers are standing up for themselves and their families and calling for shared prosperity and an end to unconscionable exploitation in the workplace. The Center for Popular Democracy is proud to support these workers as they organize across the country for justice and respect.

The Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) is currently supporting Walmart warehouse worker groups in three states to mobilize, by providing legal and organizing support. In New York, CPD is helping to mobilize faith institutions in support of fast food workers, and conducting legal work for their organizing initiative.

CPD works nationally to partner with the most innovative and effective community-based organizations, networks, and progressive unions to tackle the systemic causes of economic injustice in our country. We provide partner organizations with legal, technical, campaign and strategy support to run campaigns that win tangible improvements to the lives of the economically marginalized. CPD is working on over 40 projects, with 90 partner organizations in 22 states.
