Call for Entries: 2014 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation
Bangkok, 12 November 2013 – Entries are now being accepted for the 2014 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. The Awards recognize the successful efforts of private sector and public-private initiatives in conserving or restoring structures, places and properties of heritage value in the region. The Awards emphasize the importance of the conservation process, including the technical achievements and quality of the restoration, as well as the social impact, including community involvement in the project.
The deadline for receipt of materials is 31 March 2014.
Since the Awards were established in 2000, UNESCO has received 556 entries from 24 countries. A total of 160 projects have received Awards for high achievement in conservation, while 8 have received the Jury Commendation for Innovation.
In 2013 the award cycle received entries from the widest geographic spread to date, with a total of 47 projects submitted from 16 countries across Asia and the Pacific. With support from the Sino-Ocean Charity Foundation the programme will continue this year to expand and explore new and exciting issues related to exemplary heritage conservation practice.
Entries for the 2014 Awards programme must be submitted to UNESCO Bangkok by 31 March 2014 using an official entry form, a description of the project in the official format outlined in the link below, drawings and photographs in hard copy and on CD.
Projects involving heritage properties more than fifty years old which were completed within the last ten years are eligible for consideration in the conservation category. Houses, commercial and institutional buildings, historic towns and villages, archaeological heritage sites and cultural landscapes, for example, are all suitable for entry. The project must be the result of a private sector initiative or a public-private partnership.
Winners will be announced in August 2014, with a selected number of entries receiving the “Award of Excellence”, “Award of Distinction”, “Award of Merit”, “Honourable Mention” and “Jury Commendation for Innovation”.
In addition to the conservation awards, the “Jury Commendation for Innovation” will also be considered for newly-built structures which demonstrate an outstanding architectural design that is well integrated into historic contexts. Building annexes, as well as new extensions, buildings, public spaces and structures, such as bridges, are all eligible for consideration.
In 2013, the Phra Borommathat Maha Chedi and Pharin Pariyattithammasala of Wat Prayurawongsawas, the Chedi (reliquary Buddhist stupa) and its attached hall in Wat Prayurawongsawas Worawihan temple, Bangkok, Thailand was honoured with the Award of Excellence.
The three Awards of Distinction were given to the Great Serai in Kabul, Afghanistan; the Lal Chimney Compound in Mumbai, India and the Khaplu Palace in Baltistan, Pakistan. The six Awards of Merit were won by the Maryborough Railway Station in Victoria, Australia; Enjoying Snow Yard in Beijing, China; the Tai O Heritage Hotel in Hong Kong SAR, China; the Royal Bombay Yacht Club Residential Chambers in Mumbai, India; the Otaki Town Hall in Chiba Prefecture, Japan; and the Historic Buildings in Duong Lam Village in Hanoi, Viet Nam. Two Honourable Mentions were also awarded to the Sailmaker’s Shed in Broome, Australia and the Lost Bomb Shelter of the Sofitel Legend Metropole in Hanoi, Viet Nam.
