Bangkok – Does anyone know which country was the fastest growing source of visitor arrivals to Thailand in 2024?
Saudi Arabia… Yes, that’s right.. Saudi Arabia!!
The total of 228,032 visitors was a whopping 660% increase over just 30,006 in pre-Covid 2019.
Why?
Entirely due to an outbreak of PEACE.
Exactly three years ago this month, in January 2022, the world’s two largest Buddhist and Muslim kingdoms made peace.
They overcame a 32-year diplomatic rupture which followed acts of Thai violence and criminality against Saudi businessmen, diplomats and the Saudi Royal Family in 1989-1990.
The furious Saudis retaliated by banning tourism to Thailand, booting out all Thai manpower, stopping all trade and commerce.
After more than three decades of painstaking, behind-the-scenes diplomacy, the two countries decided to patch up and move on.
The economic, social and cultural benefits were immediate and plain to see.
They work both ways. Thais are heading in droves to Saudi Arabia for Umrah and tourism, to market halal products and look for jobs.
The Diplomatic Breakthrough of the Decade is incontrovertible proof that PEACE IS THE BEST PAYMASTER.
It is just one of many examples why I confidently assert that Thailand is well placed to become the world’s first Alliance of Civilisations tourism destination.
