Which U.S. Presidential Candidate Would Avoid Another War?
(PRWEB) January 25, 2012 – If America is truly at a crossroads as many of the GOP candidates hint towards, which of the current presidential candidates would best serve our nation in avoiding war and keeping the peace? Three of the current GOP presidential candidates — Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum, tend to be more hawkish in regards to how to handle Iran specifically, while Republican Congressman Ron Paul and Democratic President Barack Obama, though belonging to separate political parties, have either been accused of being non-interventionists or “soft on terror”.
In response to questions about the Iranian nuclear facilities, former Senator Rick Santorum has stated, “We will degrade those facilities through airstrikes, and make it very public that we are doing that.” President Obama has in the past been willing to talk to Iran without preconditions, though has more recently imposed sanctions on banks dealing with Iran. But Obama has also been ridiculed as of late for asking Iran to return a U.S. drone that was reportedly brought down by Iranian forces on December 4th.
Mitt Romney proposes “crippling economic sanctions” on Iran’s central bank. Ron Paul is concerned about Iran’s potential nuclear threat, but does not believe that there is any conclusive evidence in the IAEA report, while Newt Gingrich said in response to a question by Wolf Blitzer about bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities to prevent it from becoming a nuclear power that as President of the United States he would do so “Only as a last recourse and only as a step toward replacing the regime.”
What about the other important issues facing the nation leading up to the November 2012 elections? Do voters really know what the issues are, as well as where each of the candidates stands on them; how well are they able to keep track of and make sense of the issues the country faces? It has been argued that the last presidential election was won in great part by the persona and charisma of Barack Obama, and his mantra of “Hope” and “Change” rather than any substantive proposals for change in policy.
